Whoever thinks of Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid or Granada directly at places worth seeing in Spain, I have to disappoint him. It is well known that these cities are worth a visit

But what about the small city Besalú? Or the medieval village of Beget? What about the mystical landscape around Albarracín or the fascinating view in El Torcal?

Spain is a country full of contrasts. Those who tear themselves away from the coast and make a detour inland will be rewarded with an enormous variety. That also makes it so difficult for me to commit myself to four places, but these are definitely among my favourites.

The Middle Ages in Catalonia

Catalonia has several places worth seeing that all have one thing in common: their medieval flair.

Only 24 km away from Figueres is the small town of Besalú, whose centre is listed. The most famous feature of the town is the 105 m long bridge, built in the 14th century. Tastefully nestled in the old walls, Besalú has a number of cafés, restaurants and small shops, so that you can really stroll here.

40 kilometres further west, in the Catalan Pyrenees, lies the quaint village of Beget. Motorhomes and cars have to stay out here, as the whole village is a car-free zone. But that doesn’t matter at all, as Beget and its pretty old houses can be easily explored on foot in less than an hour. Finally, it is a good idea to try the Catalan cuisine in one of the traditional restaurants.

Those who have even more desire for the Middle Ages should make a detour to Rupit. Over a suspension bridge it goes directly to the centre of the village that was built approximately in the 12th century.
It is very recommendable to also have a little walk around the village and let the lush green landscape have an effect on you.

Tour RupitRupit

Although Albarracín is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, I often wonder about the few visitors who come here in spring or autumn.
These are the most beautiful seasons to discover this fascinating place and its enchanting surroundings.

High above the medieval city is the former castle with its long wall. Those who are free of vertigo should definitely go up and enjoy the view.
At least as worthwhile is a hike through the natural park, the Albarracín in the middle of the city. The impressive rock formations lend the landscape a mysticism that cannot be ignored.

Tip for overnight stays:
There is a camping site in Albarracín. In the nature park, parking is strictly forbidden between 22.00 and 0.00 hrs. If you want to be free with your camper, you can do this at the official parking lot «La Escombrera». It is located 2 km outside Albarracín and offers a great view of the town.

Bizarre stone towers in Andalusia

This vast nature reserve is located 50 km north of Málaga and is one of Spain‘s most impressive landscapes. The reason for this is the many rock formations that fascinate geologists and biologists. But also as a normal visitor, one gets one’s money’s worth during a hiking tour, as one really does not see something like this every day.
But I strongly recommend to stay on the signposted paths or to book a guide, as it is easy to get lost between the rock towers.

Shopping tip:
In Fuente de Piedra, 40 km away, you can buy excellent olive oil produced by a small family business.

Wild Cantabria

As a lover of outdoor activities, I am also drawn to the mountains in southern Europe and Spain has more than enough to offer.

In Cantabria lie the Picos de Europa, which were still snow-covered even in June. The small town of Potes is an ideal starting point to get to know this area better. The idyllic place, which is recognized as a cultural asset, scores with its beautiful scenery, its many gastronomic offers and the unspoilt nature that surrounds it. Heidi-Feeeling is guaranteed to come up here!

Those who like to try regional specialities should not miss the hearty chickpea stew Cocido Lebaniego.

Tip for overnight stays:
Camping La Viorna is not only wonderfully quiet, but above all well cared for. Dogs are also welcome here at no extra charge.
